Research: Applying

TAPoR invites applications from researchers interested in using TAPoR infrastructure, including text analysis, publishing and metadata tools available to TAPoR designated researchers across the nodes, as well as local infrastructure, such as the UNB TAPoR server cluster and text research lab.

Research Protocol

This document describes the protocol for use of the TAPoR infrastructure. Please read the protocol carefully before submitting your application. The application form is intended for lead researchers affiliated with the University of New Brunswick. External researchers who are not directly affiliated with the University of New Brunswick but would like to apply to become a TAPoR researcher through this University are invited to contact Dr. Brad Nickerson (bgn@unb.ca) or Alan Burk (burk@unb.ca).

1. Applying

Researchers are asked to complete a brief application form, which includes details of the proposed project, project team members, and expected use of the TAPoR infrastructure. The local TAPoR Board will adjudicate project applications and a decision will be returned within 3 weeks of application.

2. Eligibility

Projects proposed by researchers who participated in the CFI application are assumed to be accepted for support. Applications from others at named nodes can be approved by the local node Research Director or Research Board. Applications from researchers not affiliated with a TAPoR node will be circulated to the Research Board for consideration. In general, we will approve all reasonable proposals that do not stress the facilities in a way that would prevent others from using them. Where there are conflicts, priority may be given to projects based on the following criteria:

  • 2.1 Excellence of the research proposed and match with the purpose of TAPoR as described in the application and other documents
  • 2.2 Technical feasibility of the proposed research and applicability of the TAPoR infrastructure
  • 2.3 Track record of the project leader

3. Reporting

Project leaders will also be expected to provide the following information to TAPoR at regular intervals:

  • 3.1 Description of the project activities for TAPoR promotional purposes
  • 3.2 Updates on the project on a pre-agreed schedule so that the Research Board is aware of the use of the infrastructure
  • 3.3 URLs for project WWW pages to which the TAPoR Home Page should link
  • 3.4 Information about any publications or significant delivery events associated with research facilitated by TAPoR. Copies of publications or news articles would be appreciated.
  • 3.5 Copies of grant applications that name TAPoR as a research infrastructure to which the applicant has access.

4. Acknowledgement

Researchers who use the infrastructure will be expected to give credit to TAPoR in public performances, publications, presentations, and online projects where appropriate. In all cases, we only expect the name of the TAPoR project and the URL for the home page to be provided in acknowledgement.

5. Research Support

TAPoR is intended to provide infrastructure upon which researchers can build specific projects and on which they can count for support when pursuing grants. If a researcher intends to apply for a grant, naming TAPoR as an available resource, the applicant is asked to contact the TAPoR Project Leader to discuss the proposal.

TAPoR encourages researchers to develop research projects using the infrastructure. TAPoR will write letters of support for other projects, if the following conditions are met:

  • 5.1 The project leader or his/her designate is given sufficient time to prepare the letter
  • 5.2 A reasonably current version of the proposal is made available
  • 5.3 The research is in the area the TAPoR infrastructure was designed to support
  • 5.4 Should the proposed project plan on utilizing TAPoR infrastructure it will be treated like any other request (see above). Should the proposed use of infrastructure conflict with other projects or place a strain on the infrastructure, we will prioritize using the criteria above (see 2. Eligibility).

6. Applying to become a TAPoR node

Institutions and/or projects can apply to become "TAPoR Nodes" in order to collaborate in the development of the shared infrastructure, to contribute to shared research projects, or to take advantage of infrastructure and/or licenses donated to the project. Applications will be considered by the Research Board. It is understood that new nodes will not have access to CFI funds and will only have access to donated infrastructure/licenses where the donation allows it. It is also understood that new nodes will not have automatic representation on the Research Board and other management committees unless they contribute significantly to the overall project. Contact TAPoR at UNB for more information.

7. Intellectual Property Rights Statement

By filling out the required form and submitting it, you, as Principal Researcher in the named project, take responsibility for securing the intellectual property rights of all materials made available through the TAPoR research infrastructure associated with The Project. Neither the TAPoR project nor the affiliated Universities are to be held responsible in the event that intellectual property rights regarding the materials associated with your work or that of The Project are disputed. You also understand that TAPoR and TAPoR Universities have the right to remove materials without prior notice as long as they inform The Project Leader in a timely fashion. You understand that materials can be removed that are disputed or which do not fit the research mandate of the project. You absolve the TAPoR Universities and the TAPoR project of any liability for the loss of time or materials due to unforeseen technical problems of the termination of the TAPoR project.
